What are veneers? Material put over your tooth or teeth to provide better aesthetics and shield your tooth/teeth from damage. The application involves your dentist applying a local anesthetic, then removing a very small portion of your tooth’s enamel. The composite resin or a porcelain veneer is then placed over the existing tooth with a permanent bonding agent and set with a special light to finish the process. Veneers can usually be done in two appointments.

Composite resin veneers can be done in one appointment. This type of veneer can last for 1-3 years depending on the care and individual habits. You must be careful with the food you eat so you prevent your new veneers from staining. Foods such as black tea and highly pigmented food can cause some discolouration of your new veneers. Porcelain Veneers are different from composite resin in that they require two visits to complete. On your first visit, your dentist will assess your teeth and prepare them for the veneers. Typically, your teeth will need to have the enamel slightly altered in preparation for the overlay of the porcelain part. A set of temporary veneers will be put in place while you wait for the permanent porcelain ones to be constructed in a lab. On the second visit, your new veneers will be affixed to your existing teeth and you will leave the dental office with a beautiful, aesthetically pleasing smile. Porcelain veneers can last for many years with proper care and avoidance of staining foods.
Composite resin veneers are more susceptible to cracks over time. While Porcelain veneers can last much longer, you still need to take precautions to make sure they stay in great shape. The glazing process makes your new veneers look like your natural teeth and you want to protect them as you would your natural teeth. Your dentist will guide you with the proper cleaning methods. Should you require a repair or replacement of your new veneers, your dentist will determine the best method to keep that beautiful smile
